Genesis 1:14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years.
Light determines both the day and night by its presence or absence. Darkness has no power of its own even over the smallest candle… let your light so shine. The same is true of love over against hate, of virtue in contrast to vice, of beauty versus ugliness because they are eternal and unquenchable since they flow from God. These take longer to prevail than physical light, but they cannot be resisted. So when we choose light and love we can never lose, not ultimately.
Each time we shine our light, however small, the light of love and mercy and grace, we push back the darkness and empower goodness. No ray of light is ever lost, but sends out an endless ripple into our world, often multiplying its effects as it travels. A small word of encouragement, a listening ear, a humble response… they loose the very heart of God on the world, and who can say how far that impact will carry?
The sun creates seasons which cycle around to make a year, a natural rhythm and pace for our lives, a measurable increment to gauge our progress on this journey. The sun does not change, does not grow dark and then light again, so the changing seasons and days are the response of the earth to its constant light: from sprouts to plants to fodder to mulch and back around again. The sun is unchanging, but we change, we grow older year by year, each day an opportunity to also grow more mature, to be filled more and more with the glow of God’s heart and let it spill onto the world around us, for we cannot truly light the world until we ourselves are transformed by the Light of the World. We have no flame of our own, but the rays we share are so much better than anything we could devise, for they flow from the source of all the power and goodness in the universe. The light of God that shines through us, however small, is infinite in its potential. Let it loose on the world today!
