Fleeing Grace

Genesis 3:8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

It is a sad day when we run from God instead of running to him.  When we flee from all Good, Beauty, and Love, we have no hope left in the world, nowhere to turn.  All other roads lead into darkness.  Shame unhealed destroys relationships, even the relationship with ourselves, for we can no longer acknowledge the truth about ourselves.  We cannot be whole apart from God, for he is all truth.

And he is the great Healer, so that hiding our failings from him will only make them fester, and sepsis will begin to spread, tainting our whole hearts.  When we fail, we must run to God, not from him.  Imperfection fears perfection only when it is a loveless, judgmental perfection, but perfect love drives out fear.  It is the love of God which draws us in to him even when we fail him.  His arms are always open for his children’s return.

And he does not wait for us to come to him.  For very love of us, God will not leave us alone, will not let us escape him, but comes after us. “Surely goodness and mercy will follow us, will chase after us, all the days of our lives.”  Nothing we do can lessen his love for us, and it will heal us if we only let it in to do its work.  God’s love is stubborn, persistent, unshakeable.
